Richard A. Bolt

Richard A. Bolt was a founding member of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab. Dr. Bolt was a member of the Architecture Machine Group at MIT for two decades and eventually led the Media Lab's Human-Computer Interface group as a senior research scientist. He was also the founding director of the Things That Think consortium at the Lab.

Bolt's parents were medical missionaries in Peking, China, where he was born. His family immigrated to the United States and resided in California. Bolt graduated from Berkeley High School and attended the University of California, Berkeley for college and graduate school. Despite his early plans to study in either music or graphical design, he chose architecture and graduated with a BA in 1933. He had acquired an interest in acoustics at the time, merging his passions for music, design, and building.
